APPLIES TO ALL WRITING
CONTESTS
1. All writing contests
must be standard manuscript form, as follows, unless
otherwise noted in the individual descriptions of the contests: white paper,
double-spaced, at least twelve point font. Poetry should be single-spaced Do
not put author’s name on manuscript, but do put title and page number in upper
right corner of each page. Attach cover sheet with author’s name,
address, phone number, and e-mail address in the upper left corner. Put word
count and specify the name of the contest in the upper right corner. Paper
clip manuscript and cover sheet . . . no staples. Must be mailed in an
8 1/2 x 11 envelope, flat. No entry fee for OWL members.
2. All submissions must be the original and unpublished work
of the author, unless otherwise noted. All contests are for OWL members
only, unless specified as "also open to public." Only one entry per
contest, unless noted otherwise.
Manuscripts will not be returned, but will be destroyed after judging.
See photo contest for photo return policy. All submissions must be the original
work of the author. The judges or reading committee shall not enter the
contest they judge or read.
3.
No gratuitous or graphic violence or sex.
4. First
place winning entries may never be entered in an OWL contest again.
5.
Entries may be disqualified for not following directions.
Cliff Edom Photo Contest
1.
Must be postmarked no later than the Monday after the
February meeting, awarded at the May meeting.

Paperclip an index card to the back of
the 5”x7” or 8”x10” matted photo, with the photographer’s name, address, phone
number, and e-mail address on it. Name may not appear anywhere on photo.
4.
Entries are judged on composition, use
of available light, and appropriateness to the theme. The theme for 2007 is
“Places in the Ozarks.” The theme rotates each year. (’08 – Things in the
Ozarks; ’09 – People in the Ozarks; ’10 – Places in the Ozarks.).
5.
Entries will not be returned unless
sufficient postage and envelopes are attached. Entries may also be picked up at
the May meeting. If not, will be destroyed. May enter more than once, with
addt’l fee.
6.
A plaque or trophy will be awarded at the
May OWL meeting to the photographer fulfilling the high standards established by
the philosophies and teachings of Cliff Odom, founder of the Photo-Journalism
Department of the Univ. of Missouri-Columbia.
Cliff Edom
founded the Photo-Journalism Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia
in 1943. He created the Pictures of the Year Contest in 1944 and the
Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949. Cliff and his wife, Vi, charter
members of OWL, published several books including,
Twice Told
Tales, An Ozarks Photo Album and Forty Years of Missouri Photo Workshops.
Cliff Edom died in 1991.
Dan Saults Contest ( Short story,
essay, or Non-fiction Article)
1. Must be postmarked
no later than the Monday after the May meeting, awarded at the August meeting.

No member may win the award more than twice in five consecutive years.
Unpublished entries must have been written within 12 months preceding entry.
Published works must have been published within 12 months preceding entry.
Submit published work in usual manuscript form, or in tear sheet form with
author's name removed or blacked out (state name of publication and date
published.)
Specific works may be entered only once.
Maximum length is 5,000 words.
Entries may be in any form―fiction,
non-fiction, essay, poem, etc.
The Dan Saults plaque or trophy will be presented during the August meeting.
Dan
Saults enjoyed a long and
distinguished career as a dedicated conservationist and outdoor journalist. He
graduated from the prestigious journalism school at the University of Missouri.
After distinguished service in WW II, he assumed editorship of Missouri
Conservationist magazine, where he became chief of the Office of Information.
Later, he became the department’s deputy director. In 1964, he joined the U.S.
Bureau of Land Management as assistant to the director and chief of information
in Washington, D.C. A year later he became chief of information for the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service (then called the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and
Wildlife). After his retirement in 1973, he and his wife Helen moved to Branson,
where he wrote a weekly column, “Saulty Observations,” for the Branson
Beacon and the Springfield News Leader, as well as articles for
Ozarks Mountaineer and Missouri Life Magazine.
After his death in September of 1985, the Dan Saults
Writing Award was established by the Ozark Writers League to honor his memory. In 1990 he was inducted into the Conservation Hall of Fame.

Money prizes and certificates awarded for first, second, and
third place. Winners announced at February meeting.
Echoes of the Ozarks Anthology Contest
Short stories and essays no longer than
3,000 words; poems, no longer than a single page; photos, at least 8x10, color
preferred, black and white if of exceptional quality and subject matter.
Stories and essays can be contemporary or historical, they
don't necessarily have to be set in the Ozarks, but should be well-written
pieces with an emphasis on good strong voice. No graphic violence or sex of
any kind, not gore or profanity. Photos must have Ozark subject matter, and
should have good contrast so as to work well on a possible book cover (300
pixels). Please identify location of photograph subject.
Previously published works are accepted, just let us know where and when.

Cover sheet should have 50 word bio, and
number of years you have been a member of OWL.
